We’ve discussed many common household pests, how to identify them and what danger they pose in a previous blog post. However, there are some more culprits you need to be aware of, which can also cause harm to your home or your health.

Wasps

Wasps are a common pest here in Oregon during the summer. Most people know to avoid them and their painful stings, but they may not realize just how much damage these pests can cause.

Wasp is a broad term that can include many different pests. One of the most common types of wasps seen in Oregon is the black and yellow mud dauber. They build their homes out of mud, hence the name. They are also easily recognizable because of their bright yellow and black bodies. They are less aggressive than other wasps, but you still don’t want to mess with them.

Paper wasps build homes out of a paper-like substance, and they come in different varieties. Their homes are often found under the overhang of the roof, under steps or anywhere that is dry and dark. Spider wasps build their nests in open areas, but they may be found in yards, parks or lots. Yellow Jackets are a brightly-colored wasp that are quite aggressive and will sting repeatedly in a single attack. The venom is stronger than a bee, which can cause a reaction from people who have allergies to wasp stings. Horntail wasps will damage the wood in your home as they burrow inside to lay eggs. Even though they prefer trees, other wood structures will do.

Ants

Ants are a nuisance for many homeowners. In the spring and summer months, you see the trail as they move across your floors and countertops in search of food. While they are just generally pesky because the entire colony comes to visit, some types of ants can cause damage to the wood in your home. Carpenter ants will bore into the wood, which can weaken the structure.

Mice and Rats

Mice and rats are two of the most destructive pests around. While you may not see them since they are masters at hiding, you will find evidence that they exist. Mice and rat feces can be found in cabinets, drawers and in various hiding places. You may also notice holes in clothing, bedding and other fabric where they have chewed the material to build nests.

If you have a severe mice or rat problem, you’re likely to hear and even see them scurrying through the house. They may be in between the walls of your home as well. This is a pest problem that needs to be taken care of right away. They can eat through cords and cables and cause hundreds or thousands of dollars in damage. They can also bite humans if you come in contact with them.

All of these pests can cause serious damage to your home, resulting in thousands of dollars in repairs. It’s critical to deal with the issue as soon as you recognize you have a problem.
