Termites get their sustenance by digesting cellulose found in dead wood (and anything made with wood material). As a result, termites cause $5 billion in property damage each year in the United States alone. Unfortunately, termite damage is NOT covered by homeowners’ insurance.
There are two kinds of termites in the Pacific Northwest: Subterranean and Dampwood. The Subterranean Termite lives in underground colonies that can contain up to 2 million members. They build distinctive “mud tubes” to gain access to food sources and to protect themselves from open air. Subterranean termites are by far the most destructive species of termite because they eat 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This ravenous eating can severely compromise the structural stability of a home as they chew their way through important support beams.
The Dampwood Termite lives in moist wood, rather than underground. Since they require wood with a high moisture content, wood in contact with the ground, or with a steady moisture source, is most prone to attack.
